Florida is located in the southeastern region of the United States and is the 3rd most populous of the U.S states. The Spanish word for Florida is “Land of Flowers” and the state was named by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León. The capital city is Tallahassee and the largest city is Jacksonville and the nickname is “The Sunshine State”. Florida is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the west, Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Straits of Florida and Cuba to the south and Alabama to the north. Florida’s most populous urban area is the Miami metropolitan area and much of the state is at or near sea level.
Florida is a popular destination for retirees and among all the states in US, Florida has the highest percentage of people over 65.
Florida is a flat state with the smallest difference between its highest and lowest points (345 ft).
Fort Lauderdale is called Venice of America and it contains over 180 miles of navigable inland waterways. Florida is a paradise for vacation and The Port of Miami is the world’s largest cruise ship port.
The climate of the north and central parts of Florida is humid subtropical (hot and humid summers and mild winters) and South Florida has a tropical climate (the temperature remains relatively constant (hot) throughout the year).
Florida is internationally known for golf, tennis, auto racing and water sports and tourism is the biggest money earning sector of Florida’s economy. Florida is also the largest producer of citrus fruit in the United States and most of the fruit, 90% goes into juice making. Florida has a large amount of tourists and in 2016 more than 112 million tourists visited Florida. The most visited vacation resort in the world is The Walt Disney World Resort with more than 50 million annual visitors.
